The scale of the Bunun consists, fundamentally, of natural overtones with
the Fanfare melody of do, mi, sol, do. Most songs are choruses, a few being
solos. Choruses are normally sung in two parts with the harmony of the
minor third, the major third, the perfect fourth, the perfect fourth, the
perfect fifth, and the perfect eighth. Re is rarely used, and mi or to
micro-tonal mi. The microtone around mi is a special feature not only of
the Bunun but also of all the tribes of Kan san tsu. The most peculiar
song of the Bunun is Pasibutbut, a song of the millet harvest festival
in the chromatic style. They especially favor musical bows, Jew's harps,
and the overtone style. Mr. Takatomo Kurosawa, a Japanese musicologist,
tried to prove the establishment of a pentatonic scale from the overtone
produced by the musical bows.
