Their scale has the fundamental structure
of tetrachord of mi, sol, la (or la, do, re) with the major second i the
major third (the first scale). Then they have the scale of re, mi,
sol, la, which seems to have been developed from the first scale (the second
scale). Most of their songs are sung in these scales and a few are
sung in the pentatonic scale (made by adding one tone to the first or second
scale) without semitones. Most songs of the Atayal proper are aolo
with fewer being choruses. T he music of the Sedeq is more sophisticated
than that of the Atayal proper, as they use a Jew's harp with multiple
tongues the canon and the ostinato styles. As the Atayal prefer improvision,
a free rhythm is easily produced. Jew's harps are most popular especially
among young people in their dances.
