About
CAMIL (Computer Assisted Music Instruction Laboratory) is located at the School of Music at the University of Illinois. It contains two independent, multi-disciplinary computer labs. CAMIL I is a special purpose lab supporting computer music classes and independent research projects in software sound synthesis, computer-based composition and interactive performance control. It is only accessible to students and faculty with activated i-Cards. The CAMIL II lab is a general-purpose facility supporting technology-related classes in Music Education. It is staffed by CITES personnel and is open to all UIUC students, faculty and staff on a walk-in basis.
News
We have just installed a new server and 37 new client machines! Here are the details:
- Computers
- Both labs now have brand new iMacs with 20-inch flat screen monitors. CAMIL II is equipped with 21 iMacs; CAMIL I contains 16 computers. For more information about the computing resources see the CAMIL I and CAMIL II lab descriptions.
- Web/File Server
- The web and file server has been upgraded to a new Mac Pro with a 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xenon processor and 4.0 GB of RAM. The new server has a Terabyte of disk space to better serve the needs of the School of Music.
- New Domain Name
- We have transitioned to a new domain name for our server:
camil.music.uiuc.edu. The domain names of the old server have been redirected to the new server in an effort to keep old links working. The new server will no longer accept urls that employ :16080 port forwarding directives (i.e.http://camil.music.uiuc.edu:16080/CAMIL/index.html). Please update any such links by removing ":16080". - Networking
- Ethernet service for the server has been upgraded to Gigabit connection speed. Wireless internet service has added in both labs as well as throughout the School of Music.
- Account Reactivation
- All existing CAMIL user accounts must be reactivated to be used with the new computers. Please e-mail the System Administrator if you would like to have your account reactivated.
About the Labs
- Lab Construction
- The CAMIL labs were recently re-designed from the ground up to specifically support SOM instruction and music related activities. They are comfortable, well-lit, acoustically neutral workspaces furnished with the highest quality materials, furniture and equipment.
- Audio/Visual Equipment
- Each lab is equipped with state-of-the-art audio/video equipment and a digital patch bay that allows the devices to be connected in different configurations. A/V signals from "student" stations can be monitored from the teacher station and stereo audio from any computer can be routed to the room's high-quality speakers. Video feeds from the teacher station, aux computer dock and digital document reader can be projected to large, electronically controlled video screens located at the front of the room. When the screens are raised large whiteboards are available for lecturing.
- Networking
- Ethernet connection within the labs and out to the campus backbone runs at 100Mbps; the server has a Gigabit connection. There is wireless ethernet service in the labs (and throughout the School of Music).
- Computers
- Computers are now leased directly from Apple on a 3-year cycle to ensure that CAMIL always runs the most up-to-date hardware and software. CAMIL II is equipped with 21 iMacs with 20-inch flat screen monitors; CAMIL I contains 16 iMacs. For more information about the computing resources see the CAMIL I and CAMIL II lab descriptions.
- Web/File Server
- The web and file server has been upgraded to a faster computer with a RAID disk array to insure that service can continue even in the event of a disk failure. Incremental backup of user accounts occurs nightly.
- Access/Security
- CAMIL I and II now have specially designed acoustic doors. The door to CAMIL I is locked at all times; the door to CAMIL II is unlocked during open lab times and locked during closed times. When the doors are locked, access to the rooms is only possible for specially activated i-Cards. The card reader in the door handle automatically logs the card number and time of day that the door is opened. Additionally, CAMIL II is protected by a motion sensor and CAMIL I by a monitored fiber-optical cable.

Lab Use
The CAMIL labs, including the networks, computers, software and supporting equipment are owned by the University of Illinois and subject to the policies, regulations and laws established by the University, the State of Illinois and the Federal Government.
- All registered SOM students, faculty and staff are entitled to use the CAMIL labs.
- Work related to current classes takes precedence over personal or non-class related work.
- Entrance into the labs during class sessions or presentations is not allowed, even if the door is open. The labs will be clearly posted as closed during these times. Please do not knock on the door or ask if you may come in. Consult the schedule for open lab hours and plan accordingly. It is possible to access your files on the server from any computer connected to the campus network.
- CAMIL does not provide headphones. Please remember to bring headphones if your work involves sound playback.
- Before leaving the lab please make sure that your work area is clean and that the keyboards and monitor are properly positioned for the next user.
