Account Maintenance

If you have a CAMIL user account, you can use it to log onto any of the machines in the CAMIL I and CAMIL II labs. Your CAMIL user account login name is generally the same as your UIUC network ID. A temporary password will be provided to you by the lab administrator. Your CAMIL password is separate from all of your other University of Illinois passwords. You should be prompted to change your password when you first log in. If not, please change this as soon as possible by selecting the "System Preferences" application and clicking on "Accounts."
Your account has a "homefolder." To go to your homefolder, click on the house icon that is on your Dock (or click on the house icon in any Finder window). Anything you save in your homefolder is stored on the server and will be available on any CAMIL computer that you log onto. Your Desktop is part of your homefolder.
Each machine has a folder named "Temp" which may be used as temporary local storage. You can use this folder to store larger files temporarily while you're working with them. You may find it necessary to move audio or video files to this location before working on them so that the machine doesn't need to access them from over the network. The Temp directory is not for permanent file storage and is not secure. Files in Temp are not backed up and may be deleted periodically without warning. After working with the Temp flder, you should copy important files to a more secure location (your homefolder or external media such as a USB drive, CD, etc.) before logging off.
You may customize your working environment by clicking on the "System Preferences" application and selecting the various icons in the window that appears. Changes to these settings are stored on the server and take effect on all CAMIL machines.

The disk quota for accounts is 500MB. This means that you may save no more than 500MB of data in your homefolder. If you try to save more data than the quota will allow, you will probably get an error message saying that "there is not enough free space." The disk quota applies to any file stored in your homefolder including files that the operating system or various applications create and use (i.e. files in your Library folder such as preferences, caches, etc.). If you are close to meeting your disk quota the operating system, or an application, may be unable to save or create such files during normal operation and unusual and inconvenient behavior may occur.
Certain groups of users will automatically be granted a higher disk quota:
- students taking classes in CAMIL I or CAMIL II (temporary - on a semester by semester basis)
- SOM faculty members (permanent))
- graduate students in composition (permanent)
Other users may petition for a temporary increase in their disk quota for completion of a faculty-sponsored, data intensive project in CAMIL I or CAMIL II (e.g. a school-related digital audio or video project).
If you are granted a temporary increase in your disk quota you may be asked to clear out any data in excess of the standard quota (generally 500MB) by the end of the term of this increase. Specifically, if you are taking a class in one of the labs and will not be taking a class in one of the labs during the next semester, you may be asked to backup and delete excess data at the end of the semester (or shortly thereafter). Disk quotas will be reviewed at the beginning of each semester. The lab administrator reserves the right to ask students who are no longer taking classes in the labs to remove any excess data if they haven't already done so within a reasonable time frame (usually two weeks). Excess data will be deleted by the lab administrator.
CAMIL user accounts that are not used for 365 days automatically become inactive (login is disabled). The lab administrator deletes inactive accounts periodically:
- If the account holder is no longer at University of Illinois their account will be deleted without notice.
- If the account holder is still affiliated with the University of Illinois their account data may be archived without notice.
All users' Trash folders are automatically emptied each night. This means that anything you put in your Trash will be permanently deleted within one day even if you don't empty your Trash yourself. This policy exists so that if a user forgets to empty their Trash themselves the trashed files will be deleted automatically each night and thus not take up disk space and count against the disk quota on their account.
